Renowned adventurer Adol "the Red" Christin and his companion Dogi arrive at Balduq, a city annexed by the Romun Empire, only for Adol to be detained before he ever sets foot properly inside. While imprisoned, he meets a mysterious woman named Aprilis who transforms him into a Monstrum, a being with supernatural Gifts and the power to exorcise monsters. Ys IX: Monstrum Nox follows Adol as he allies with his fellow Monstrum to hold back the fearsome threats emerging from a shadowy dimension called the Grimwald Nox.
Six notorious Monstrum are playable throughout, each carrying their own unique Gifts, whether that's scaling sheer walls or detecting hidden objects, all in service of protecting Balduq from the shadowy creatures pouring out of the Nox. Exploring the massive walled city means accepting quests to help the townsfolk and diving into the Grimwald Nox itself to vanquish the threats spilling out of it, giving the game a rhythm of investigation and combat that keeps the city and its dangers tightly connected.
Combat builds on familiar Ys mechanics like Flash Dodge and Flash Guard for precise, reactive fighting, while new additions like Gifts and Boost Mode expand the toolkit considerably beyond earlier entries in the series. Beneath the action sits a mystery: unraveling the truth behind the Monstrum curse and the unrest brewing within Balduq's walls drives the story forward as much as any single fight against the Grimwald Nox's creatures.
