Originally released in 1988, Wasteland brought the post-apocalypse to video games and inspired an entire genre that followed. Wasteland Remastered rebuilds that landmark RPG with completely overhauled graphics and sound, letting players see exactly where the Wasteland series, and by extension much of the modern post-apocalyptic RPG genre, actually began.
It's the year 2087, nearly a century after an all-out nuclear war turned vast swaths of the Earth into a radioactive hellscape. You play a Desert Ranger, part of a band of stalwart lawmen serving as the last real defense against hunger, sickness, ravaging raiders, and mutants across what was once the American southwest. When something more secretive and sinister starts menacing what's left of humanity, investigating it means recruiting help, following leads, and making choices that shape the world around you, since the wrong call can cost your life and the lives of the people you're sworn to protect.
This remaster retains the spirit of the original game while updating the visuals and audio for modern hardware, and the original storybook that accompanied the physical release is fully available in-game now, illustrated and fully voiced rather than left as a separate physical artifact. An expanded musical score pulled from the "Wasteland 1 - The Original Classic" release backs the whole experience, decades-old bugs have finally been fixed, controller support lets players survive the apocalypse from the couch, and various quality-of-life improvements make the post-apocalypse a little friendlier without sacrificing what made the original a genre-defining RPG in the first place.
