Unpacking is a zen game about the deeply familiar experience of pulling possessions out of boxes and fitting them into a new home. Part block-fitting puzzle, part home decoration, it invites players to build a satisfying living space while quietly learning clues about the life of the person they're unpacking for, without a single line of spoken dialogue explaining any of it directly.
Across eight separate house moves, ranging from a single childhood bedroom to a full house shared with someone else, the game offers a real sense of intimacy with a character you never actually see and a story you're never explicitly told. Stacking plates, hanging towels, and arranging bookshelves become small acts of narrative discovery, since the items that travel with this character from move to move, and the ones that quietly get left behind, say more about her life than any cutscene could.
There are no timers, meters, or scores here, just meditative, unhurried gameplay that rewards paying close attention to the small domestic details scattered throughout each new space. An original score from BAFTA award-winning composer and audio director Jeff van Dyck backs the whole experience, matching the game's patient, reflective pace throughout every box unpacked.
