Signalis is set in a dystopian future where humanity has colonized the solar system and the totalitarian regime of Eusan maintains its grip through aggressive surveillance and propaganda. Humanoid androids called Replikas live and work alongside the human population as laborers, civil servants, and Protektors, designed to closely resemble the citizens they serve.
You play as Elster, a technician Replika who awakens from cryostasis inside a wrecked vessel after crash-landing on a remote, snow-covered planet, searching for her missing crew member. Her search leads her through the ruins of a seemingly abandoned underground labor camp, surreal visions of cosmic horror, and flashbacks to a past that doesn't actually belong to her, with the lines between reality and dream blurring further the deeper she pushes. Uncovering what actually happened, and why, means venturing into the depths beneath the planet's surface, where mysterious encoded radio signals and a fellow Replika with dark intentions stand in her way alongside everything else lurking down there.
Classic survival horror mechanics run throughout: managing scarce resources carefully, solving challenging environmental puzzles, and fighting off nightmarish creatures while exploring the dim corners of the derelict spaceship and the doomed facility beneath it. The game draws direct inspiration from classic cosmic horror alongside the visual and tonal sensibilities of Stanley Kubrick, Hideaki Anno, and David Lynch, building an atmospheric science-fiction tale focused on identity, memory, and the particular terror of things that can't fully be known or explained.
Visually, Signalis leans into a brutalist retrotech aesthetic, driven by fluid 3D character animation, dynamic lighting and shadow work, and complex transparency effects, all wrapped in cinematic, sci-fi anime-inspired storytelling that gives the whole experience a distinct, melancholic identity within the survival horror genre.
