Pippit, a budding yoyo master, has never fit in well with the rest of his family: the powerful, influential Pipistrellos, headed by his formidable aunt, Madame Pipistrello, who has held a firm grip on the city for decades through their electricity monopoly. During his annual visit to the Pipistrello Manor, Pippit gets swept up in a rival company's nefarious plot to dethrone the Madame and seize control of the city's energy source, forcing aunt and nephew into an entirely new, uneasy partnership.
Billed as the first Yoyovania, Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo combines combat, platforming, puzzle-solving, and exploration across a sprawling 2D top-down cityscape, with the yoyo itself serving as both weapon and traversal tool throughout. Each newly learned yoyo trick reshapes how the city can actually be navigated, and chaining moves together opens up routes to places that seemed completely unreachable just a few tricks earlier, with many challenges offering multiple valid solutions for players willing to experiment.
The city itself spans four distinct districts packed with more than 1,000 screens' worth of challenges and secrets, from shopping districts and industrial complexes to a geek culture convention and a sports-obsessed neighborhood, each hiding the lair of a rival crime boss determined to steal the Pipistrello family's dominance. Infiltrating those labyrinthine businesses means fighting through henchmen and solving action puzzles along the way, while mastering more than 10 yoyo tricks and Special Moves, collecting over 40 equippable Badges, unlocking more than 20 passive upgrades through a shady loan shark, and tracking down over 80 other collectibles keeps the exploration rewarding well beyond the main story. Composer Yoko Shimomura lends her talents as guest composer, giving the whole adventure a nostalgic musical backbone.
