College dropout Mae Borowski returns home to the crumbling former mining town of Possum Springs, hoping to resume her aimless old life and reconnect with the friends she left behind. Night in the Woods makes clear pretty fast that things aren't the same: home feels different now, her old friends have grown and changed in their own directions, and as autumn leaves fall and the wind turns colder, something strange is stirring beneath the surface of a town that used to feel entirely familiar.
The game leans heavily into exploration, story, and character rather than traditional puzzle-solving, giving players dozens of townspeople to meet and get to know across a lush, vibrant world. Mae herself is a cat, and rooftops, ledges, and powerlines all become her personal playground for getting around, though she's far from the only creature making use of that vertical space. Between hanging out with old friends, exploring Possum Springs inside and out, and venturing into the surrounding countryside, the game builds its emotional core almost entirely out of small, ordinary moments rather than dramatic set pieces.
Something in the woods, though, keeps pulling at the edges of that ordinary life, and Mae starts experiencing sudden, unexplained changes that grant her access to a side of town she never knew existed. Developed by Infinite Fall, a team-up between Alec Holowka, Scott Benson, and Bethany Hockenberry following a successful Kickstarter, the story sits with the particular feeling of sensing everything is about to change without quite knowing how to move forward, and wondering how well any of us can actually meet that moment when it arrives.
