The evil Children of Hargon are determined to eradicate all creators, outlawing the building, cooking, and creation of anything at all. Dragon Quest Builders 2 opens with the calamitous cult capturing builders across the world, and only a young apprentice builder manages to escape their clutches, washing up on the shores of the deserted Isle of Awakening where they meet Malroth, a spirited, amnesiac youth with a fondness for fighting and no memory of his own past.
Despite the number in the title, this is a completely standalone experience with new characters, an expansive world, and unlimited building combinations, built by the Dragon Quest series creators Yuji Horii, character designer Akira Toriyama, and composer Koichi Sugiyama. Exploring, gathering, and crafting form the backbone of the campaign, with each island holding its own unique materials that push players to grow, cook, and learn new recipes and blueprints as they rebuild towns destroyed by Hargon's followers. Combat pairs the builder's own growing skills with Malroth's aggressive, powerful attacks, giving players a fighting partner rather than a passive companion tagging along.
Farming ties directly into the building system too, letting players till soil, plant seeds, and raise crops ranging from humble cabbage to sweet sugar cane, customizing fields to support whatever's actually being grown. Dashing across open fields, diving into watery depths for hidden treasure, climbing mountains, and gliding home all give traversal variety beyond simple walking, and up to four players can team up online in the sandbox Isle of Awakening mode to build massive collaborative projects together. The Steam release bundles in additional content including the Hotto Stuff Pack, Modernist Pack, Aquarium Pack, and several cosmetic outfits and items on top of the base campaign.
