Constance is a 2D hand-drawn action adventure about a paintbrush-wielding artist trying to escape a colorful but decaying inner world, one built directly out of her own declining mental health. Paint-based mechanics let you dive into ground and walls or slice through the air and enemies, keeping combat and traversal locked into a constant state of flow rather than separate systems.
New brush techniques unlock as you progress, helping you defeat tougher enemies, clear platforming challenges, and solve puzzles that get more complex the deeper you go. There's a risk attached to using those techniques too much, though: overusing your brush corrupts your Paint, and full corruption brings negative effects you'll want to avoid. Sketches gathered from inspirations found while exploring let you customize Constance's capabilities further, and materials collected along the way can upgrade those sketches into stronger versions.
Even death carries a choice. Push through the challenge that killed you at a cost, or fall back to a safe point and explore other unbeaten paths instead. The world itself is non-linear and interconnected, with each colorful biome and its enemies representing a different piece of Constance's psyche and personal history, and playable flashbacks let you step directly into her past to understand the struggle, creativity, and search for purpose driving the whole journey.
