The last remaining memories fade away into darkness. Your mind is a mess, and only a feeling of being hunted remains. You must escape. Amnesia: The Dark Descent is a first-person survival horror game about immersion, discovery, and living through a nightmare, an experience built to chill players to the core.
Set in 1839, the game casts players as Daniel, a young man from London who awakens in the dark halls of Prussian Brennenburg Castle with little to no memory of himself or his past. All he can remember is his name, that he lives in Mayfair, and that something is hunting him. Shortly after waking, Daniel discovers a note written in his own hand, revealing that he deliberately erased his own memories because he couldn't bear to live with what he'd lost, and urging him to descend into the castle's Inner Sanctum to kill a man named Alexander, the castle's baron.
Exploring Brennenburg's eerie pathways means confronting Daniel's own troubled memories alongside the external horrors stalking the castle's halls, since the horror here comes just as much from inside the mind as from anything lurking in the shadows. A fully physically simulated world, advanced 3D graphics for its time, and a dynamic sound system pull players fully into the experience with no cutscenes or time jumps breaking the immersion, leaving hiding, running, and quick thinking as the only real tools available against whatever's actually hunting Daniel through the dark.
